You can be the best part of our residents’ day by sending them a smile!

The Ask

We’re collecting letters, drawings, cards or encouraging notes to send to the over 71,000 residents we serve across the country! That’s a lot of folks deserving of a smile and we can only do this with your help.

One of the most inspiring things throughout the COVID response has been the ways communities have come together to support each other. For Morrison Living, that includes partnering with fellow Compass Group sectors like Chartwells K12, who serve meals to students in schools across the country.

When senior living communities were no longer accepting visitors due to coronavirus, Chartwells K12 rallied children across the country to write letters and draw pictures to send smiles to our residents who may be isolated from friends and family. Our residents can then send a smile back—connecting our youngest generation to our oldest through a timeless tradition of receiving a letter in the mail!

Send a Smile program

Even though this initiative started with Morrison Living and Chartwells K12, we’re encouraging everyone to send a smile! There is no better time than now to reach out to others with positive messages and support.

Letter Format

Get your class or school to write letters. We want everyone in your church, civic group, sorority/fraternity, office, or neighborhood to write letters. Get social and share this message to your network. Give our residents that old fashioned connection through a hand written note —while we all may be far apart, we’re close at heart!

Here are the specs you need to know when writing your letter:

Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. It can be a hand drawn picture or a short and simple positive greeting.  The purpose of the letter is to send a smile to residents in senior living communities that are isolated from friends and family due to coronavirus. We reserve the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message of compassion.

Feel free to include your mailing address, and you may get a response from a new pen pal!

Every individual letter is important, but for organizational purposes, please try to submit letters in bulk whenever possible. Work with your school, church, civic group, sorority/fraternity, office, neighborhood, etc. and send all letters bundled as directed below.

For group submissions, letters should be bundled in groups of 50, 100, or 250 and held together with two rubber bands: one wrapped lengthwise and the other widthwise. This will help tremendously with sorting. The top page in the bundle should indicate clearly how many letters are included. Do not bundle letters unless they are in groups of 50, 100, or 250. If you have a partial bundle of less than 50 letters, fasten them together with a paperclip. The top page in the group should clearly indicate how many letters are included.  If you are submitting 10 or fewer letters, the letters can be folded to fit into a standard business-size envelope.
